New Smyrna Beach Area - Indian River Lagoon - Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report

May 14, 2023

2023 is gonna be remembered as the year we started to get back to the way it was before the algae bloom 10+ years ago. Seagrass has regrown tremendously in much of Mosquito Lagoon. Baitfish have rebounded in huge numbers this year in the backwaters around Ponce Inlet south through the lagoons. We are seeing the most gamefish we’ve had on the Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River Lagoon flats since 2017. All this has translated into an amazing spring and early summer of great catching for redfish, snook, snook and speckled trout.

It’s been crazy busy this year. Have had very limited availability. Only a couple days left open for May. June is already half way booked and so is July. Will be very difficult to find late notice availability. Plan ahead…Summers through late September are packed!

Been such an awesome first half of the year for Redfish in Mosquito Lagoon. We haven’t seen these kind of numbers and schools of fish since 2017. Had plenty of choices for schools on the flats to fish all year. They are starting to break up as it warms up and the lagoon water loses clarity but catching remains solid lately. The big bull redfish are getting more active as we trend to summer. Just started poking around trying and have caught a couple each day in the 25-35 pound class. It only gets better for big redfish in New Smyrna Beach, Mosquito Lagoon and Ponce Inlet as we go towards November. Some pretty epic days of 10+ big redfish over 20 pounds will be had over the next few months, but even the slow days yield a few. Can and will pretty much target some big reds every day now till the end of October.

Fishing for Speckled Trout in Mosquito Lagoon and the Indian River Lagoon has been pretty good the last few weeks. We can expect them almost every place I’ve been fishing. We are catching decent numbers and several big ones in the 24-28” range have come to the boat the last couple weeks. Lots more in the 18-22” range. June is one of the peak months to for a great chance to catch a giant! I’m expecting some more big ones approaching 30” to be caught over the new few weeks. The rebound in sea grass in Mosquito Lagoon is going to be a huge boom for sea trout populations over the years to come. They now have a place to live and grow up again!

Had some pretty killer days fishing Snook in the New Smyrna Beach and Ponce Inlet backwaters around March and April. Was pretty strategic when we fished them and those days paid off with serious action…dozens caught each day with several good ones around 30 inches. Haven’t really had much to speak of the last couple weeks though as they aren’t really hanging out on the Lagoon flats and areas I’ve been fishing. We’ll get them off and on as we start to fish more in some of their hangouts.

As i mentioned above, we are back to the peak busy summer season. June July and August are the 3 busiest months of the year. There is going to be limited availability, if at all. Half of June is booked, half of July is already booked and we've been slammed for May. Don’t wait till last minute! Text me or call me at 386-212-4931 or even send me an email to secure a date. Read my fishing charter page to view the top reasons why you should book your trip with me today! I look forward to fishing with you soon.
